Kamala Visweswaran joined the CAIS/SAAC Board in 2017. She is a member of the Ethnic Studies Department at UC San Diego who has lived and worked in India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
In addition to her day job as an anthropologist, she is interested in the visual and performing arts and over the years has done gallery talks or presentations with artists Shahzia Sikander, Santosh Kumar Das, and T. Sanathanan; the Navarasa Dance Theatre and a variety of filmmakers.
In 2005, she curated a showing of Mithila painter Santosh Kumar Das’s “Gujarat Series” for the South Asia Institute at the University of Texas, interviewed Das, and edited the exhibit catalogue, “The Gujarat Series: An Introduction ” (South Asia Institute, University of Texas, 2006). Among other things, she is currently at work on an essay which explores Thamodarapillai Sanatanan’s “Incomplete Thombu” in the context of the Sri Lankan civil war.
